Hayduk
Hayduk Smbatyan is an Armenian contemporary artist known for his deeply emotive and textured works that explore the nuances of human emotion and inner worlds. Born and based in Ejmiatsin, Armenia, Smbatyan graduated from the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts, earning both a Bachelor’s (2008–2012) and Master’s degree (2012–2014) in Painting. A member of the Union of Painters of Armenia since 2018, he has steadily built a vibrant presence in the Armenian and international art scenes.
His creative philosophy centers on the exploration of human feelings and concentration, using textured, matte surfaces that draw attention to the materiality of paint itself, evoking profound emotional resonance. Critics have praised his style for merging abstract lyricism, expressionist sculpture, and elements of realism, creating multilayered canvases that invite introspection and dialogue with nature and existence.
Smbatyan’s work has been exhibited extensively, including personal exhibitions like “Pointing Notebook” at Dalan Gallery (2021) and “Gravity” at the Union of Architects Gallery in Yerevan (2022). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as the International Biennale in Gyumri, Armenia Art Fair, and international forums like St. Petersburg’s “Winter Insomnia.” His art has also been showcased at the Shanghai Art Collection Museum’s 2024 group exhibition “Crafting for Innovation.”
Throughout his career, Smbatyan has earned recognition through awards such as the “Best Young Painter” diploma from the Ejmiatsin Municipality and the Best Diploma Work prize after Eduard Isabekyan. His work continues to contribute to the evolving narrative of contemporary Armenian art, offering a bridge between the personal and the universal.
